21/09/2014 Summertown Spartans 1 Cumnor Minors 5

Another great early autumnal day for football saw Cumnor face up to the newly formed Summertown Spartans.  The game started much as last week.  Cumnor dominated territory and possession with some good-looking passing football but couldn't quite provide the final touch.  Nice moves around the box but no-one could quite finish it off and their keeper was making things difficult.  The pressure continued and eventually paid off.  Dom got the ball facing one way, turned round 180 degrees - pirouetted I think they say   - and blasted it in on his right from the edge of the box. 1-0.  Another lovely ball in from Jamie found Dom with only their keeper to beat but he managed to keep us out. Cam came close with a shot that narrowly missed the left post.  Cumnor had had all the pressure but Summertown then broke dangerously, only to run into a somewhat agricultural challenge from Scott. One supporter called it 'Uruguayan' in its sublety. The subsequent free kick cleared the bar.

Ronan came on for his Cumnor debut for Tom - and made himself strong in midfield, linking up well with the forwards.  The pressure continued.  Harry forced a fantastic top-corner save from their keeper from a free kick. Jamie covering the park then smothered a counter attack and back up the other end Cameron came close. Their defence continued to shut down our attacks but conceded a spate of corners.  Finally after five identical corners from Harry placed in just the right spot Dom managed to connect sweetly with one. 2-0.

The defensive line-up of George M. Scott, John and Mehmet looked strong and dealt with everything. towards the end of the half Mehmet got a bit of a clattering and swapped with George D.

After half-time the pattern continued.  A Jamie cross and a Cam first time shot didn't quite come off. Then another corner and Ronan's looping header hit the top corner of the bar.  Their keeper was having a great game - and our attacks kept him busy.

But the keeper had no chance for Dom's second, a shot which took a wicked deflection off a defender and sent him the wrong way.  3-0.  The attacks kept coming - a great through ball to Cam was saved when the keeper rushed out.  A Harry free kick perfectly placed sailed over their keeper but was dramatically headed off the line.  Cam connected with another Harry corner but sent it over. Ronan was making things happen in midfield, joining up well with Cookie and George M down the right.   Matthew was on up-front on the right and kept the pressure on their left-back.  Jamie was having a great game down the left - fast and strong.  Harry then found himself outside the area - got it on to his favoured left foot (has he got another one?) and curled a peach into the top corner to make it 4-0.  Soon after Tom pounced on a goal kick which didn't get far. He came back at the keeper, calmly slotting it home for the fifth.

Summertown weren't giving up - and as the half dragged on and in the long grass, Cumnor seemed to wilt and lose shape a bit.   A few attacks found the Cumnor attack offside/  Cumnor had managed to deal with everything that had come at them. And it looked like we might get away with a second clean sheet until a mix up between Adam and John let Summertown sneak in between and snatch a goal.   Mehmet back on - fancied his chances and hit a rocket over the bar from inside the box - whilst George M tried an up and under from forty yards.

The long-half came to an end.  Another strong and really promising performance....credit to Summertown who never gave up and whose keeper had a blinder.  And to Ollie and Andy - a fine Cumnor lino double act.  Everyone played well but....

Man of the match - was Scott for a fine defensive performance....bring on the Blueberries.

PS Cameraman screwed up - er.. forgetting to put a card in his camera - so this weeks pictures are also from last week.
